MINIMESTERS

Self-contained four-week seminars beginning in October, November, January and March.

Minimester 1: THE TORAH AS AN ICON
Taught by Rabbi Beth Nichols
Dates: October 18, 25, November 1 and 8. Register by October 4.

If the words of the Torah are what are most important to our Judaism, why do we treat a Sefer Torah -- a Torah scroll -- differently than a printed text? Why do we kiss, dress and bury our Torah Scrolls?

This class will explore our emotional, spiritual and intellectual connections to the Sefer Torah. We will trace the historical origins of the written Torah, walk through the imagery of the Torah service, and debate whether the Sefer Torah is treated as an icon.

Minimester 2: "Shema Yisrael, I don't know Eloheinu, I don't know Ekhad"
Taught by Cantor Erik Contzius
Dates: November 29, December 6, 13 and 20. Register by November 15.

What is God? Is there a place for the person who does not believe in God at the Temple? Why do bad things happen to good people?

We will address all these questions and more as we study Rational Theology, the understanding that there are ways to view God as something real, understandable and rational.

Sid and Ruth Lapidus Scholar in Residence
