Purim is the anniversary of the Jewish people being saved from extinction at the hands of evil Haman by Mordeccai and Esther, as portrayed in the biblical Book of Esther. Ever since that time, Purim has been an occasion of celebration and joy. At Temple Israel, we hold a service that includes the reading of the megillah (scroll of Esther) as well as a spiel (comedic play), followed by a festive Purim party. Our religious school has its own celebratory service and costume parade, as does our Early Childhood Program. The Brotherhood hosts a Purim Carnival that draws hundreds of visitors to its booths, rides and attractions. Everyone in our Temple community has an opportunity to take part in the fun.
